7 best double majors in engineering

In this post, we’re going to discover the 7 principal and best double majors in engineering…

1 mechanical and electrical engineering

The first best combo engineering double major is mechanical and electrical engineering. For students who are interested in both sides and want to understand mechanical and electrical systems, this double major will be the best option to choose or opt for.

especially for people who are passionate about robotics which involves mechanical electrical and software programming.

In mechanical engineering you’ll be learning all the basics and knowledge about how to build mechanical systems, that being said all mechanical components that a machine can have.  While in the second step the machine needs to have electrical wiring add a computer program. Which is the job of the electrical engineer.

So mixing these two occupations will allow you to be one of the best engineers and work in the mechatronics or robotics industry.

2 computer science and aeronautic engineering

Is mechanical engineering harder than computer science?

The second double engineering major is computer science and aeronautics engineering.  this occupation is made for people who are passionate about programming and  Aeronautics systems.

Getting a double major degree is this both occupations allow you to work with famous Aeronautics companies like Boeing or airports, programming for them the airplane Electronics machines.

in this occupation, you’ll be learning both sides of programming and electronics.  that being said you will be specially specialized in a domain called ”embedded systems ”

normally you will be using mathematics and programming  languages skills  like C ++   and python to develop or program airplane computers and deal with electronic devices such as:

  • Pressure Sensors.
  • Temperature Sensors.
  • Force Sensors.
  • Torque Sensors.
  • Speed Sensors.

3 mechanical engineering and law

In this case, you will not be double majoring, but you will need to finish first your mechanical engineering course and then apply for law school. This is essential if you want to become a patent lawyer. It has many obstacles to achieve but it is one of the most respectful occupations in the United States.

Your job as a patent lawyer in mechanical engineering is to check the innovation or to finally approve them.

So your goal is to use your mechanical engineering skills to review patent mechanical engineering products.

4 electrical engineering and computer science

Double majoring in electrical and computer engineering will give you a good overlap and software and computer hardware.  in this case, you will be able to design hardware systems and program them at the same time.

it is like designing a computer board and programming it, this major is complex and requires studying complex Physics subjects such as electromagnetics and at the same time mathematics subjects like calculus and algebra.

In addition, you will be required to study different aspects of programming,  in computer science alone you’ll be focusing on web, and mobile. Desktop programming platforms.

This double major of electrical engineering and computer science will require you to expand more,  I know how to program hardware systems like robots or industrial machines but need to learn additional programming languages and experience to gain.

5 biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering

doubling a major in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering is great for a student who is interested to work in biomedical engineering, especially in the mechatronics field which is building industrial limbs.

That being said you’ll be working as a mechanical engineer to design and build industrial limbs or legs for instance.  In addition, you will be working on advanced projects like robots that can completely hold the human body as you can see in this video below.

And even more, you can design some small devices or objects that can be included in the inner body of humans. For instance, devices that are connected to the heart in order to protect a patient from heart failure.

6 mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering

If you are passionate about aeronautics engineering, especially on the mechanical side you could double major in mechanical and aeronautics engineering. It’s not going to be easy you would be required to study a lot of physics subjects.

Normally at the beginning of your first year, you will choose mechanical engineering, afterward, you would have a specialty choice between aeronautics or aerospace engineering this is the most common road that mechanical engineering follows.

But there are other programs that students can follow by doubling mechanical and aeronautical engineering in just 4.5 years due to the biggest overlap between mechanical and aerospace engineering.

7 biomedical engineering and electrical engineering

For students who are interested to work in biomedical engineering and especially have occupations in the electrical domain taking a major in biomedical engineering and electrical engineering will be a good option to opt for.

Doubling in these two fields allows you to take Prosthetics occupations by working for companies designing prosthetic arms or legs for people who have disabilities.  and otherwise, people who have accidents or someones who had circumstances that made them lose their limbs.

Your principal occupation will be to design electronic systems that run with robotics or Industrial arms. in addition, Create programs that monitor these robots.

Things you have to know before double majoring in engineering

Double majoring in engineering is one of the most difficult things that you could do as a student.  the complexity differs for each double major you would choose. For instance, if you choose to double major in mechanical and Aeronautics engineering this will be the easiest double major to choose.

Because there is a lot of overlap between mechanical engineering and Aeronautics,  even though, you could be done in just 4.5 years.  while and some other double majors you could spend 5 to 6 years or maybe more if you stuck.

The other thing in double majoring in engineering is overload,  which means you have to study a lot of complex subjects which can be frustrating for a lot of people.

Especially when we talk about the majority of students who will not have a  lot of time to study these overloaded programs. Because they have to work on the side to pay their expenses and tuition loans.

So if you aren’t passionate and have good financial situations. That doesn’t force you to work part, in this case, you could follow this path and take a double major in engineering.

Otherwise, it would be good to take the traditional path which is choosing one major and then a minor and this subject you have an interest in.
